Synopsis

After the sudden death of her ex-husband Brian, Lauren’s much younger widow, Jessica, arrange the funeral and settle his affairs. Although they were once adversaries in the battle for Brian’s heart, Lauren agrees to pitch in for the sake of their troubled sixteen-year-old daughter Emily. But Lauren gets much more than she bargained for when information comes to light about Brian’s shady business deals with his old college friend Jordan Connors and the crime lord Jorge Arena, jeopardizing Brian’s estate and throwing the women into the world of high-stakes illegal gambling.

My Review

Okay! So when I was asked to review a copy of this book by Blackstone publishing, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but after reading the synopsis I was definitely intrigued enough to say yes. I mean hello, the ex-wife and the current wife getting to together to solve the death of their husband/ex-husband.

The book begins in the present with Laura and Jessica basically dodging bullets, “I’m like whattt the helll?” I can’t wait to find out why they’re in the middle of a shootout, cowering in fear for their lives.

The book goes back and forth between the present and the past, where we learn more information on the major characters, I thought that there wasn’t enough character development on some of them, nothing long and dragged out but a bit more insight would have been great. The background story on both Lauren and Jessica were well done.

I would have like to learn more about Jordan, Carl, Nicole, and Steve. Especially the relationship with Carl and Laura. And definitely Nicole, that girl is a complete bitch and half😅, but she hid it so well.

A few pages in we see that Brian has died unexpectedly and the women must now deal with the repercussion of his death. But they soon find out something’s amiss when their “friend” and Brian’s law partner begin to avoid them.

At first, I totally wanted to hate Jessica, but as the book delved into her character, you begin to see that she’s been hiding behind a facade all along. *Sigh* I started feeling sorry for her and rooting for her as well to deal with her inner demons and reclaim herself.

Well, we already know that Brian is a cheater but let me just say that he’s a complete cheating asshole on so many levels, it’s not funny, not that he deserved to die, but you get in bed with the devil and bad things will happen to you.

You’re are going to seriously cringe at the action of Jorge’s right-hand man Lucho’s treatment of Lauren, I really hate that guy. So yes there are a few cringe-worthy scenes in this book.

It’s not as action-packed as I was hoping for, but there’s action happening throughout the book, along with some twists and turns. I can’t say I was at the edge of my seat though, however, the story is very good. So it was a great read overall and I enjoyed seeing the women coming together, helping and supporting each other. Watching Jessica get stronger and gain more self-esteem within herself was great to see. I would definitely recommend this book.

The twist about Brian’s death was pretty good though. Would you have guessed it? I guess you’ll find out when you read the book.

This book does touch a bit upon weapons smuggling, gambling, depression, rape, sex, and drug addictions.
