What would you do? If while driving down the road one night during a thunderstorm and you saw a car stopped at the side of the road, you see it’s a woman by herself sitting there as if waiting for someone. Do you get out of your car to ask her if she needs help? Wait to see if she ask you for help? Or do nothing at all.

It’s what Cass Anderson was debating with herself at the time. Well, it’s a dark and stormy night, you’re on an isolated road, I mean seriously, what do you do? For me I’m just going to whip out my phone and call the darn Police or CAA, someone, cause am not getting out of my car. I mean dang! There are woods on both sides of the road, it’s pitch black and pouring rain (scary), I’m just gonna wait in my car until the police arrive. Ok, am done ranting😊.

Cass is a teacher off for the summer holidays. She’s getting ready to enjoy her summer with her husband Matthew and spend some quality time with her best friend, Rachel. great plan so far right?. Too bad for her, she learns about the murder of a woman, very close to her home. Well, that would for sure put a damper on things for sure. I mean, what if the asshole murderer is still out there looking for more victims?

Just when I think my journey is never going to end, I clear a bend and see rear lights of a car a hundred yards or so in front of me. Giving a shaky sigh of relief, I speed up a little. Intent on catching it up, it’s only when I’m almost on top of it that I realize it isn’t moving at all, but parked awkwardly in a small lay-by. Caught unaware, I swerve ut around it, missing the right-hand side of its bumper by inches and as I draw level, I turn and glare angrily at the driver, ready to yell at him for not putting on his warning lights. A woman looks back at me, her features blurred by the teeming rain.

Cass gets paranoid that the murderer is out there, watching her, waiting for his chance to get her (poor girl). She believes this because she stopped at the murdered woman’s car for a bit. Remember? She was deciding whether to help or not. As the days go by, she gets even more paranoid and, begins forgetting small things, such as buying her friend’s birthday present. But her husband and best friend reassure her there’s nothing to worry about, all is fine in her world. But it just kept getting worse at least in her mind. Most of her paranoia stems from the fact that her mom had Dementia, and she’s scared that she may have Early Onset Dementia.

Now we have to remember that Cass is home for the summer, she has all this time on her hands to drive herself crazy about the woman’s murder and her murderer being out there on the lose. She also has to come to terms with the other events happening in her life.

I do have to say though; I knew what was happening to Cass when she experienced certain things in the house, which she attributed early on-set dementia. “Girl thought she done gone and lost her mind.” There was a lot of cursing and finger pointing once I knew.

The art of psychological manipulation is quite prevalent in this fun and entertaining read, I won’t say any more about this, as I don’t want to spoil anything.

This novel is a mystery, suspense and psychological thriller where B.A. Paris keeps you on your toes with the characters in this book. You won’t want to stop reading until the very end, probably spewing curses along the way. ‘Just saying’.

I enjoyed B.A. Paris’s first book Behind Closed Doors, and I enjoyed this as well. It is not as intense as the first book, it certainly didn’t break any psychological-thriller molds. Nevertheless, you won’t be able to stop reading this. What it all comes down to, of course, is her execution, what with the quick pacing, the buildup of anticipation, the psychological manipulation, it’s all of this and more.

Her next brilliant novel is Bring Me Back. Coming June 19,  2018. Can’t wait to read it!

Bring Me Back

A young British couple are driving through France on vacation when they stop at a service station. He runs in to use the restroom, she stays in the car. When he returns, her car door has been left open, but she’s not inside. No one ever sees her again.

Ten years later he’s engaged to be married; he’s happy, and his past is only a tiny part of his life now. Until he comes home from work one day and finds his new fiancée sitting on their sofa turning something over in her fingers, holding it up to the light. Something that would have no worth to anyone else, something only he and she would know about, because his wife-to-be is the sister of his missing first love.

As more and more questions are raised, their relationship becomes strained. Has his first love somehow come back to him after all this time? Or is the person who took her playing games with his mind?
